Founded in 1921, The Royal British Legion is a charity which helps to support servicemen and women, and their relatives. Although they provide various means of support, including emotional, a large part of their work is to raise monetary funds. The role of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Lottery, therefore, is to help with the gathering of this money.
If you are 18 years old, or older, it is easy to subscribe to play the Poppy Lottery via links provided on the britishlegion.org.uk website. The organisers will then, within 14 days, advise you of your personalised lottery numbers and your commencement date. Your number will then be entered weekly into the Lottery for a cost of only £1 each week.
Results are available every Friday and can be checked online via the website or by telephone. However, in the event of a win, funds will automatically be sent by mail.
There are 200 prizes every week up for grabs, including £2,000 for the first prize. Many smaller prizes up are also available, however, ranging from £200 for a second prize to £20 for a fifth place prize.
The most appealing monetary motivation for entering this Lottery, however, is for the quarterly draw. At this point, it is possible to win up to £20,000; the prize amount for both January and July 2018, for example. For these draws, you can also purchase extra entries. Once a year, the Poppy Lottery will also automatically enter you into a bonus draw, free of charge, in recognition of your continued support.
Another reason for subscribing is of course moral: the fact that you know that your money is going to help such a good cause. Whether it be a break in a respite centre for a bereaved family or giving careers advice to those who are leaving the Service, every penny helps.
The website for the Poppy Lottery is particularly ergonomic and effective. ‘Playerzone’ allows players to purchase additional entries and interact more fully, learning about how their money is being used. Winners stories and quotes motivate players to learn more about the cause and to join. There is also information on alternative prizes and competitions and a link to the online shop. Details for how to follow The Legion on social media and how to contact them are also presented, as are ways to donate.
